Frieze New York

Now in its eighth year, Frieze New York has established itself as one of the most highly anticipated events on the international art calendar alongside Frieze London, Frieze Masters, and Frieze Los Angeles. As the global lead sponsor, Deutsche Bank continues its longstanding commitment to identifying and encouraging new artistic talent. 

This year, Philadelphia and New York-based artist ruby onyinyechi amanze was selected as the Frieze New York 2019 Deutsche Bank Artist. A selection of her work will be exhibited in the Deutsche Bank Wealth Management Lounge at this years fair. 

amanze’s work explores ideas of cultural hybridity through the depiction of imaginary places inhabited by a unique cohort of aliens, hybrids, and ghosts. These extraordinary characters float, dance, stretch, embrace or otherwise interact with nature and each other throughout these constructed spaces. amanze’s large-scale dreamscapes further evoke personal narratives about the elusiveness of home and notions of joy, fluidity, and sensuality.

Through the use of custom supports, colored glazing, and shaped frames, amanze’s work pushes the traditional boundaries of two-dimensional drawing into the sculptural realm. By making the physicality of space malleable, her drawings can easily transcend the medium.
